The following is an article by
Silver
Lil
Three years ago Aurellia my first Arab,
indicated that she had had enough of going to horse shows, so I decided to
retire her. I’ve still got her, and ride
her most days. Andrea (Boyle), who rode
Auri at shows, then thought we might try to find another mare to replace her
and own the new horse in partnership.
Question was where did we find one?
I watched the Ridden Mare class at the Arab
National Show and the horse that took my eye was an almost white elegant mare
that behaved herself beautifully. This
was Silver Lil owned and bred by Annette Dixon.
I mentioned this to Andrea who then approached Annette. She was rather surprised but we went to see
her and Silver in
Andrea and Silver got to know each other
over the winter and Silver’s first show was North Staffs at Rodbaston in
Staffordshire. Here we had a good start
as she won her class and was Champion.
Silver had an excellent season being Champion Mare at the National Arab
Show (ridden there by Charlotte Dabbs), and winning the mare class and Reserve
Champion at the UK International Arab Show at Towerlands in
2006 turned out to be even better that the
previous year when Silver had wins at six shows (4 ‘C’ shows) and two
Championships, so we were all wondering what would happen at the Horse of the
Year show at the NEC in Birmingham in October.
We took Silver the evening before her class for exercise, so she could
see the arena she would be in the next day.
I usually get Silver ready at shows, but I’m
not allowed to at HOYS as I get rather stressed so I left the work to Bev and
Jane, and sat in the stands and watched.
In her class I thought Silver looked
outstanding – I’m not biased of course, and she went beautifully for Andrea and
for the judge. The horses are called in
in reverse order, and Silver was still unplaced with three to go, so either the
top three or nowhere! I was shaking at
this point. Our main rival Shamzarah was
in second and then the announcer said ‘First and Wastesolve Ridden Arabian Mare
of the Year, our congratulations go to Silver Lil’ and she walked forward to
receive her rosette. What a moment! I never thought it would happen. So Andrea and Silver had their big occasion
leading off the winners and doing their solo lap of honour, and also getting to
ride in the International Arena for the Championship.
I have visited Horse of the Year Show most
years since about 1960, both as a spectator or more recently as a
competitor. I had always dreamt of
winning there, so I think the moral must be to keep on trying and eventually
you may achieve your ambition.
(Editor’s note: Silver Lil has already
qualified for HOYS again this year!)
